I've got a '00 DRZ400S with an '08 SM fork swap and '15 SM rims.
Never overestimate the 5 speed. My friend runs a DRz400 SM and can run around at 75-80 mph all day long. The engine can do it without any problems. I don't know where any vibration ranges are on the 400, but really I doubt it's too big a deal or he'd be bitching about it. I've never heard him say word one about gearing. Hey guys yep I am a newb been on the site just watching for a little bit and I finally got my first supermoto its a 2006 drz sm, I use it to commute.
I've had the 21'/18' set up since I bought the bike with conventional forks. I've noticed at lower speeds, such as a 20mph school zone, the bike has a tough time going in a straight line.
It wants to go left or right as if it's riding on a tightrope, or on the edge of a razorblade. There is no middle ground, either slightly left or slightly right.
If I'm going faster, roughly 30/40mph+ it doesn't have the issue and travels straight.
I bought the SM wheels thinking it was just an aggressive DT21/D606 tire issue. But the issue persists.
I greased and torqued the steering stem to spec when installing in April.
I saw in my service manual that the S model has a rake of 27 degrees, 10' and the SM has a 26 degree, 15' rake.
Is this simply how the bike handles? I mean it IS a street legal dirt bike, and the rake angles aren't that decent for street to begin with.
Could I have the tops of the forks showing too little? https://imgur.com/gallery/uHeTnIb
I've owned the bike since March, it's something I've simply lived with. I've had the bike down to frame and didn't see any distortion or tweaking.
Has anyone else experienced this?

4 years agoHi guys, had my 06 DRZ 400 SM for about a month now, only rode about 200 miles so far though due carrying out maintenance and waiting for delivery ect.
A bit worried about one thing, when i accelerate hard from say 50-70, i get a mini tankslapper. Handlebars just take themselves left to right rapidly. I just hold on lightly as i would normal riding, but im a bit scared that if i hit a pothole or something and it creates a proper tank slapper im screwed.
Is this normal behavior from one of these bikes? ive noticed its not so bad if i accelerate gently and have hit 90 and felt quite comfortable, but wouldnt want to do it for long (i know you shouldnt need to one one of these anyway)
Appreciate any replys!
Thanks
